IBI Featured in The Lancet Neurology

A new commentary highlights the International Brain Initiative's progress toward advancing neuroscience through international collaboration and calls on governments and policymakers to “recognize the relevance and worthiness of the [International Brain Initiative] IBI.” (The Lancet Neurology, December 2021)

The article, published this month in The Lancet Neurology, stems from a recent workshop organized by the European Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA). It brought together European Members of Parliament and brain research leaders from around the world to discuss recent advances in neuroscience and their implications for science and society. The workshop focused on the IBI’s role as a forum for international collaboration and the potential to strengthen its ability to facilitate networking and promote collaboration among different countries and sectors.

Based on the workshop, the STOA Panel made the following recommendations about the IBI's model and the future of data sharing, ethics and training in neuroscience:

The IBI should be considered a valuable resource to gain consensus on neuroscience priorities for the scientific community and societies worldwide;

An infrastructure for sharing data among the brain projects should be implemented;

Interdisciplinary training for young scientists should be supported by increasing flexibility and removing national barriers to funding opportunities;

The potential impact of neuroscience must be addressed within an international and humanistic framework;

Advances in neuroscience will impact human health and artificial intelligence, necessitating greater dialogue is needed between scientists and policymakers.
